Erasmus+/eTwinning – Mobility to Croatia

Highlights of the students of the first Erasmus+ Mobility at Osnova škola in Vidovec/Varaždin, Croatia

Dobar dan! (English: Hello!)

Our first students’ Erasmus+ Mobility in our project Be A.C.T.I.V.E., Be Happy! (Project Number: 2020-1-DE03-KA229-077137-2) took place. We are still so happy that the Mobility finally could take place after waiting for it for two years. The students were happy about finally meeting their penpals in their offline life. In our last post you can read our official programme of the Mobility. After this Mobility, the students reported that they feel very confident in speaking English in daily life and that they have new friends now! Below, the German students present their experiences day by day.

I got up at 4 o’clock in the morning because we had to get to the Welle parking lot at 5.00 a.m.. It was dark and very cold but we had to take a plane from Colone to Zagreb. It was my first flight ever and I was so nervous but it was really nice and now I want to fly all the time. After the flight, we took a bus to the Croatian city of Varaždin and we were welcomed with a very cute sign with our names on it. The sign was handmade. Mrs Tenge-Rietberg motivated us to contact others and to take part in the activities. My host mother drove us to a restaurant by car. We ate pizza. Then, we went home and relaxed because we were very tired. Later, our host student Ema and we created a mask with a balloon and paste.

In the morning on Monday, I woke up for the first time in another family at a girl named Dora. I had breakfast with Dora and a Spanish boy named Genis. The breakfast was very good and we spoke English most of the time because Genis can’t speak Croatian, but I speak Croatian, English and German. After breakfast, we went to Dora’s school and then the bus came and picked us up, we got to a house where all countries presented their school and local food. After the presentations, we had a tea tasting with herbs and spieces from all countries and we tried healthy cookies from the women’s association of Vidovec. Next, we went to school and ate healthy lunch. Later, we did some sport with all international students at school. After finishing the programme, we went to Dora‘s house and then to the city Varaždin and I met her friends. In the evening, we ate at a restaurant. At the end of the day, we were tired and went to sleep.

In the early morning, we had a delicious breakfast with the host family. I stayed with Ema and her sister Tina. Their parents were so lovely and tried everything to make us feel at home. We played games inside and outside. Ema’s mum is a teacher in her school. We must speak English. Sometimes it was hard but we got it. Later in the morning, we met the city officials in the Varaždin historical city hall. After that, we had a city tour of Varaždin. We discovered the city by using the website “Clue City“ on our phones. We walked around for two hours. The weather was very sunny. In the afternoon, we had a workshop on mental health and emotions. In the evening, we went for pizza and bowling. My favourite part of the day was the bowling and airhockey.
We had so much fun with friends, we laughed so much and the food was very good.

On Wednesday, we went to the National Park Plitvice Lakes. We had to get up ealy because the bus ride there took a little longer. When we were there, we got a tour of the park. We hiked a lot and saw a lot of beautiful places. I think that the waterfalls were the most beautiful experience that day, a sight that you will not soon forget. We also did a boat tour there. It was my first time on a boat, so I was excited. During the boat trip, we enjoyed the fresh air and the beautiful surroundings. It was a very nice day in the National Park.

On Thursday, we went to the city of Zagreb. It was wonderful. They have a beautiful architecture. We could always count on Mr Cinar to show us the way. Next, we went to the “Amazinga Fun Centre“. It was so great there. There were trampolines and we played Laser Tag. At the end, we participated in games with virtual reality glasses. I also played football in a team with a Croatian teacher and our team won! My highlight was playing Laser Tag because it was a lot of fun and we won against the other team.

In the morning, we got up and had breakfast. After that, we were at school and had a great digital workshop in groups. We learnt how to work with the programme “Artsteps“. We created digital galleries. We had a break in which we learnt a Zumba choreography. After that, we were hungry and ate lunch at school. Then, we had free time and had very much fun with the host family. In the evening, we had a goodbye party at school. The party was with our new friends from Lithuania, Sweden, Spain, Croatia and Turkey. All the students’ teams thanked their teachers. It was fun to play a Kahoot with our friends. We ate traditional food in the cafeteria. It was very delicious. I really like the Croatian food. After that, we had a great party: We all had so much fun and I sang many songs at the microphone, also with my English teacher Ms Ludger😊. She always was there for us in all kinds of situations and was proud of our English language skills. We only spoke English with Ms Ludger. The Zumba workshop at noon motivated us to dance at the party, too. In the end, we danced to a traditional Croatian song. Sadly, we had to say goodbye to the Lithuanian, Swedish and Turkish Teams because they travelled home early on Saturday.

It was time to say goodbye to our host families and the Spanish and Croatian teachers. We always had fun and were too active and too happy to be homesick. We took the bus to Zagreb and stayed in a farmhouse hostel with the chickens and dogs ran free. Luckily we had Gabriel to help us communicate with the people in the village by speaking Croatian. It was another great cultural experience!

We are all very grateful for these experiences and look forward to our next Mobility in Sweden in May 2022!
Zbogom (English: Goodbye)
Yours, German participants and TR, LDG and CIN
